A new community service club called “Becca’s Closet” is starting up at Blair this spring. Becca’s Closet is a charity organization that provides dresses to high school girls who could not otherwise afford to attend their high school proms. The club first collects beautiful dresses, along with shoes and other accessories. It then turns a large space into an amazing dress giveaway, where students at Blair will help the girls pick the perfect gown for their prom. The room will be decorated, music will be playing, and there will even be a red carpet with a photographer, so that each girl who receives a dress will feel like a star.
Becca’s Closet is a national organization with over 40 chapters spread out across the country. It is named after Rebecca Kirtman, who tragically passed away in a car accident in 2003. During her freshman year of high school, Becca launched a dress drive to help girls in southern Florida be able to attend prom. She helped hundreds of girls in her freshman and sophomore years. The Becca’s Closet organization continues to this day in honor of her amazing contributions to her community and to keep her dream alive.
Most of the Becca’s Closet chapters across the country are run as high school clubs, and the girls who participate find helping other girls choose their perfect dress to be both fun and rewarding. The club at Blair hopes to hold its first dress distribution event in April, giving girls plenty of time to prepare for their proms in May and June. The Blair chapter of Becca’s Closet will be sure to have a large impact by making prom possible for all girls at high schools nearby.
