On September 29, the Blair community gathered to hear Gareth Patterson ’18 speak at Chapel. Gareth started his speech by attempting to introduce himself, “I’m a gamer, nerd, and overall a strange person,” he said. After spending the first few minutes talking about who he is and his hobbies (memes, especially), he went on to discuss the main purpose of his Chapel Speech, family. After rebounding from losing his grandfather, Gareth reflected on the importance of spending time with loved ones: “Embrace your strange family for who it is,” he said. “All their problems make them who they are and in turn makes you who you are.”
Gareth’s message was well-received among students: “I laughed, I cried, I mostly laughed, and saw some dank memes,” recalls Blake Wilkey ’18. An anonymous Junior also had a positive review of Gareth’s speech: “As a boarding student who doesn’t see his parents everyday, Gareth’s chapel about embracing family really hit home.”
Whether you’re a professional memer or a boarding student who feels homesick, Gareth’s Chapel brought the community closer together and served as a nice escape from the busy Blair schedule.
