Friday, October 2. The Blair Cross Country team traveled up to Lehigh University to participate in the annual Paul Short Run. Despite the harsh weather beating down on the athletes and the overwhelming number of participants (at least 1,000), the Blair runners pulled through to run some of their best 5k times. Sanjay Paul (’16) led the Blair boys varsity in the race, with a time of 17:51. It was a season record to have five more varsity runners run under 19 minutes, with all running below the 20-minute mark. At the front of the Blair girls varsity was Cara Ganning (’16) with a time of 22:39, followed closely by the rest of her teammates. The JV teams faced the worst of the storm, with temperatures dropping to 40 degrees Fahrenheit and the mud causing a slip-and-slide show. Although the JV boys arrived only fifteen minutes prior to the start of their race, many achieved their personal best times. The JV girls also ran a successful race, shining through with a display of perseverance and dedication.
A number of the runners had returned from injuries and illnesses, so it was a delight to see both teams’ spirit of unity and camaraderie. As the season soon reaches its halfway mark, the Blair runners continue to bring home impressive times and more importantly, seem to be finding their strides.
And as always, a special thanks to all the coaches – Dr. Miller, Mr. Devaney, Mr. Browse, and Dr. Higgin – and parents for constantly supporting the Blair Cross Country team.
