Q. Dear College Counselor, What should I do if my parents and I disagree about a school?
A. The college process needs to be a pact of sorts, an agreement between all interested parties (student/parents/counselor). While there needs to be parental input– especially in situations involving the cost of attendance– the final college choices should remain with the student.
Obviously this is sometimes much easier said than done. In difficult situations– and they occur each and every year– negotiation is the key. Students and parents really need to work through these difficult situations, to try to understand each other’s needs and interests, and come to some sort of compromise. In most cases, with the help of the counselor, these situations can work themselves out. That course of action is the best we all can hope for.
